Projects Hydro

Hydro power is generated by rotating hydro turbines with water. The rotary motion is linked to a generator which produces electricity. Conventional large hydropower creates a big fall in the reservoir to generate power. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions can be achieved by replacing fossil fuel based electricity with wind derived electricity.

UkrHydroEnergo (UHE) Hydropower Rehabilitation Project in UkraineUkraine

Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities were assigned by the World Bank to conduct the preliminary study for this project.

This project involved the rehabilitation of the hydropower plants located on the Dnipro and Dnister Rivers to increase their electricity generation capacity and efficiency. Additional power generated by the rehabilitated hydropower units was used as an alternative to that generated by coal thermal plants.

The project generated emission reductions of approximately1.4 million tCO2e from 2006 to the end of 2012.

Taishir Hydro Power Generation Project in MongoliaMongolia

This project introduced 11 MW hydropower in the isolated area of Gobi Altai and Zavkhan, Mongolia. The electricity supply in these areas is dependent on small diesel generators and the area faces substantial electricity shortages.

The project resulted in 37,000 MWh of electricity generation (around 90% of electricity demands in the area), resulting in emission reductions of approximately 30 thousand tCO2e per year.

Miyi Wantan Hydroelectric ProjectChina

This project generates hydropower on a small scale using a reservoir located in the Sichuan Province of China. The project involved the installation of 2 units of 16 MW turbine generator sets.

The project expects to generate 135,000 MWh electricity for export to the Central China Power Grid.

The project replaces fossil fuel based electricity, resulting in emission reductions of approximately 130 thousand tCO2e per year.
